It’s better if you press play…

[turntable needle drops, original score from ‘The Little Mermaid’ begins to play, pitch warbles softly on recording]
My name is Joseph, or Joe. you can call me either.

I’m a composer and sound designer.
Meaning I can write music…
[strings soar]
Design sound worlds….

[little mermaid transitions into dark otherworldly soundscape]
And turn a collective vision, into something audible.
[dark soundscape transitions into UNHCR: The Journey at it’s climax]

[gentle guitar arpeggios, summer in the garden sounds, a distant memory]
It all started when I first picked up a guitar aged 7.
It was less about performing, and more about finding spaces I could get lost in.
[swirling music box appears in the background]
To me, sound is emotional depth, endless experimentation, abstraction, but above all… it’s a place in time.

[guitar memory dissipates]

[Kyoto recording starts, distant sirens mingle with pentatonic hand pan playing, birds, stream nearby]
[improvised pan playing starts to find melody]
You’re listening to one of my favourite recordings that I’ve made.
I was sitting in Kyoto in Japan, looking over the city from a forested pathway, when a handpan player appeared and started to play, perfectly scoring the moment.

The birds, the sirens, the people….
[cyclist passes in the recording, bike bell in tune with playing]
And his score, all worked together in service to this moment in time.
I just had to pay attention.

I’ve spent the last 10 years composing and creating sound design for ads, films, immersive audiobooks, TV or anything else I’ve been asked to.
I've worked on some great projects alongside brilliant minds, and had material world success, picking up some awards and recognition.

Talking about awards makes me uncomfortable, but I believe I won them, because I have learnt to listen for these moments in time.
Moments when sounds come together, and create a sort of witchcraft.

[hand panning dissolves]

[‘Life of the ASMRtists’ score music begins to play]
Whilst I am an extremely versatile and intuitive composer and sound designer, I have a creative sensibility that finds its way into every project.

I like moments where music becomes sound…
[score music morphs into wind, a distant ship horn, storm approaching and conceptual sound design]
and sound becomes music.
[abstract sound world morphs back to score]
And collaborators, who are open to exploring the magic, that lies in what we hear.
Have a watch and a listen to get a sense of that.

My heart sings when in a great collaboration.
There's nothing quite like the feeling of connecting with people, pushing towards making something great.

Thank you for listening, visiting my site and checking out my work.
I hope you stop by again.
Until next time…

[score music fades away, record finishes, needle lifted off]

Testimonials

  • ‘Collaborating with Joe on a series of projects has been an absolute delight, showcasing his versatility and deep understanding of my creative vision. With his flare for composition, and a natural ease at working with and around sound design he has been able to craft immersive soundscapes that show innovation and originality, and have truly elevated each project.

Noteworthy is his skill and delicate touch in evoking moods, seamlessly transitioning from one tonal shift to another. The end result is always something built from an initial creative idea, but taken to new and surprising places. His deep understanding of cinematic language is key to this success.

As we traverse a spectrum of projects, it is clear that Joe's artistic spirit, combined with his acute musical intuition, consistently adds an invaluable layer of magic to our collaborations.’

  • ‘Joe was an absolute dream to work with. He’s patient, passionate and a top tier composer and sound designer. His mastery in evoking feeling through sound and ‘just getting it’, no matter how garbled the feedback, makes every collaboration an absolute pleasure. Work with Joe, you’ll be glad you did.’

  • ‘It was a pleasure to work with Joe on The Little Mermaid – he brought creativity and incredible visualisation to the score. The music lifts our storytelling, heightening the emotions and bringing real magic to this tale, which is wowing listeners.

Joe’s ability to respond to our demanding brief and respond positively and imaginatively to our direction made the experience all the more rewarding and successful.’

  • ‘We loved working with Joe for our film, 'Ourselves Alone'. He was collaborative, dedicated, full of ideas and he understood exactly what we wanted from the score. His music created an unsettling, growing feeling of tension that builds throughout the film. He combined this with specific motifs for the main characters that really stand out. 'Ourselves Alone' has since gone on to have a successful, award-winning festival run, and that wouldn't have happened without Joe's brilliant work.’

  • ‘Joe was on our team for over seven years - I feel blessed to have had his musical intuition on tap for so long. He brings calm, considered and diligent insight to his work… and that little extra magic that only comes from a highly skilled multi-instrumentalist with an ear that understands how all the pieces come together.’
